History of the Centre

ŠU Women’s studies center was established and approved of the Senate act in September, 1997. According to the ŠU Senate act, issued on the 18th of May in 2005 the center of Women’s studies was re-organized into the Institute of Gender studies. On the 27th of February, 2008 the Institute of Gender studies was transformed into the Center of Gender studies. The head of the centre is principal researcher, prof. dr. Virginija Šidlauskienė.

Today the GSC functions as base for interdisciplinary academic research on women and gender. The centre also plays an important role in forming gender policy in Lithuania. Centre provides training, research on gender equality and discrimination in different fields and implements social innovations on gender equality institutionally, nationally and globally. Centre is financed by state budget and different programmes’ donors.
